Who we are and why we prepare

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 2.5 million people in the United States lost their homes due to disasters in 2023. “While a lot of the risks are out of the hands of renters, they can research to make informed decisions and prepare. Before moving to a new area, renters should research the floodplain and find out what risks that area is exposed to.” -  CNBC News. Anyone can go online and look up hazards in the area, but few people know how to interpret the data and compare how it affects one property vs. another. Here at UCF, we experienced it in 2022, when over 200 Arden Villas residences were forced to evacuate due to horrific flooding from Hurricane Ian, while neighboring communities were not affected. Counties aim to mitigate these risks through risk assessment and hazard reports. However,  lack of comprehensive information can make these costly and incomplete.
